Deauville Deux belvédères face à la mer

Deauville in France is an upmarket seaside resort for locals and tourists alike. Host glamorous events such as horse racing, polo matches and also the famous American Film Festival. Deauville also boasts a world-renowned casino, Casino Barrière Deauville. Alongside high-end hotels, smart boutiques for shoppers and restaurants for discerning eaters L’Essentiel and Maximin Helio both boast a Michelin star. Deauville also has a magnificent beach and a famous boardwalk.

Market Place du Marche

A market is held most days at Place du Marché selling fresh produce such as meat, fish and vegetables. Mainly held under the large wooden buildings on either side of the square. The market is surrounded by cafes and restaurants, a real local meeting place.

Half-timbered Norman-style buildings

Town Hall Deauville

We parked just outside the centre of the Town. It was about a 10-15 minute walk along the beach and the Famous boardwalk with beach huts named after film stars. We walked into the port area, Port de Deauville Trouville and over the fancy bridge Deux Belvédères face à la Mer (The two Belvederes).

The town looked lovely with huge beautiful half-timbered Norman-style buildings. The streets were clean and the market square was laid with mosaic tile flooring. It looked really good surrounded by the bars and cafes. We did not do any shopping as the shops looked a little on the expensive side. So we just window-shopped and admired the place itself. We had a look around the tourist information centre and the train station Gare De Trouville-Deauville. The building was beautiful inside and out, and very clean. We walked to the Horse racing track Deauville-La Touques Racecourse, (also home to the Polo Club Deauville International Polo Club) there is also another Horse racing track called Clairefontaine Racecourse.

Lunchtime Deauville France

Window shopping Deauville

At lunchtime, we looked for a bakery and managed to find a place called La Parisienne Deauville. They served ready-made salads and sandwiches, filled rolls of French bread and quiches. I had a quiche and Clare had a salad. We walked down rue Désiré le Hoc. It was probably one of the most designer streets in Deauville with the best French designer boutiques such as Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Lancel and Longchamp. At the end of the street just before rue Eugene Colas, we found a large house with a garden. It turned out to be the Town Hall, so we found a seat and ate our lunch. It was lovely, very nice food.

After lunch, we walked down rue Eugene Colas toward the beach. The designer shops continued all the way to the Casino. Just before the Casino was the French department store Printemps, another fine boutique designer department store for window shopping.

Casino Barrière Deauville

Casino Barrière Deauville

Deauville boasts a world-renowned casino. Casino Barrière Deauville. By day, the immaculate façade with its tall windows, rounded wings and majestic entrance, never fails to impress. By night, enhanced by the lighting effects that cover it in gold, it is truly enchanting. Inside, crystal chandeliers, marble, mirrors and a ceiling height of 20m all emphasise the rich red and gold décor by Jacques Garcia. A sumptuous room where gigantic columns and a gilded statue watch over the players. With bright flashing lights and the ringing of the Jackpot, the atmosphere is electric. And there’s more… Bathed in light, the Table Games Room immerses you in a sumptuous Empire style. With walls in russet hues, soft red lighting and velvet-covered chairs, this cosy atmosphere is perfect for putting your most advanced strategies into play.

American Film Festival

Deauville American Film Festival

We were fortunate to visit the week they hosted this event. Although we didn’t see any famous people walking around the town. It’s the biggest French film festival after Cannes, the Deauville American Film Festival takes place every year in the glamorous seaside resort of Deauville and celebrates all the biggest and best movies from the US. The festival premieres over 100 films every year, from burgeoning independent producers to acclaimed Hollywood directors.
