Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) was a Croatian sculptor, architect, and writer, renowned for his significant contributions to the art world. Born in the small village of Otavice in the Dalmatian hinterland. Meštrović’s early exposure to the traditional rural lifestyle and the influences of Old Slavic mythology and Christian traditions laid the foundation for his artistic journey.

The Ivan Meštrović Museums are committed to the preservation, research, and promotion of the legacy and life of Ivan Meštrović (1883 Vrpolje, Croatia – 1962 South Bend, Indiana, USA). A prominent figure in Croatian art during the first half of the 20th century, Meštrović excelled as a sculptor, painter, architect, and writer. His profound impact is evident in numerous masterpieces, remarkable architecture, and refined spaces, all generously bequeathed to the Croatian people through his 1952 Deed of Donation.

The Museums span four locations, each integral to Meštrović’s life and work. His home and studio in Zagreb (The Meštrović Atelier), the family villa (The Meštrović Gallery), the meticulously renovated Renaissance Castello (The Meštrović’s Crikvine – Kaštilac) in Split, and Otavice (The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), the birthplace of his family. Within these spaces, visitors can immerse themselves in the richness of Meštrović’s artistic expression. With hundreds of his works on display.

The Croatian Parliament, recognizing the cultural significance of Meštrović’s contributions, enacted the Ivan Meštrović Foundation Act in 1991, consolidating the locations specified in the Deed of Donation into a cohesive organization based in Zagreb. In 2007, a further amendment transformed the foundation into the Ivan Meštrović Museums, relocating the administrative centre to Split.

Meštrović’s global acclaim has left an indelible mark, influencing generations of sculptors and artists worldwide. His works grace museums, galleries, and collections internationally, while public spaces adorned with his statues continue to captivate audiences with their monumental and timeless character.
