National Trust visit to Knole in Kent

A National Trust visit, to Knole in Kent. If you’re looking for a fascinating and educational day out, a visit to the National Trust property at Knole in Kent is a must-see. This magnificent estate, situated on 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland, has a rich history dating back to the 15th century. We called in here on our way to Folkestone to catch our train. As we drove from the entrance gate to the property we saw the deer relaxing on a winter sunny morning. They looked totally at rest enjoying a little bit of sunshine on a cold morning.

We decided to do a walk around the grounds after parking the van. It was nice to walk past the deer and then on into the town of Sevenoaks. We arrived at 10.00 am and the house did not open until 11.00 am. I knew that there was a small Saturday market. We had a walk around the Town, the market and a few shops then headed back to Knole. It’s very well signposted from the Town see the left photograph.

Upon arrival, visitors can explore the sprawling estate, including the impressive 600-year-old house, which has been the seat of the Sackville family since the 17th century. While exploring the house, visitors can also learn about the various owners and their impact on the property. The impressive collection of artwork includes pieces by famous artists such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough, and Reynolds.

Outside, visitors can wander through the tranquil gardens and deer park, which is home to a herd of over 350 wild deer. The gardens boast stunning views, ancient trees, and a walled garden with an impressive collection of fruit trees.

The Brewhouse café at Knole

After all that exploring, visitors can enjoy a well-deserved break at the on-site café named The Brewhouse café. The café offers a range of hot and cold drinks and food including sandwiches, jacket potatoes, pasties and stews. You’ll find a plentiful supply of scones too, baked on the premises daily, and a delicious selection of cakes and biscuits. The cafe is housed in a former stable block and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

With more than 1,000 acres of parkland and home to a wild deer herd, Knole’s estate offers many beautiful views. One of the best spots to enjoy this is the café’s rooftop terrace, where you can take in the views while enjoying a leisurely lunch or simply sit and watch the deer go by with your favourite drink.
