Shimokitazawa Tokyo’s Vintage Wonderland

Nestled in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward, Ikenoue is a charming neighbourhood that offers a peaceful respite from the city’s bustling pace. The area around Ikenoue Station is a delightful blend of narrow streets, independent cafés, and stylish boutiques, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. As we walked towards Shimokitazawa, we passed through Ikenoue and were pleasantly surprised by the small village atmosphere. Music drifted through the streets from tannoys, adding a whimsical touch to the serene surroundings. Despite being just a short ride from the vibrant hubs of Shibuya and Shinjuku, Ikenoue feels like a world away, exuding a calm and nostalgic charm. For those who enjoy exploring off the beaten track, this hidden gem is a must-visit in Tokyo.

It was a long day and a long walk. We did not want to get back to Shibuya crossing too early as it would still be light. We wanted to see the crossing in the dark. after leaving Shimokitazwa, we headed for Meiji Jingu where we ate some lunch (Outside the grounds on a park bench) which we had bought from Le Ressort Bakery Link They make Bread, focaccia and filled baguettes, plus fruit tarts and croissants, in a compact, modern French bakery.

The route we walked, we followed Google Maps to each place but chose the nicer walking streets, mainly back streets and unusual areas. It felt very safe, the whole of Tokyo felt like a safe place to walk.

By Train (Fastest Option)

   • Take the Odakyu Line (local or express) directly to Shimokitazawa Station.
   • Travel time: About 7 minutes on the express.

2. From Shibuya:
   • Take the Keio Inokashira Line (local or express) to Shimokitazawa Station.
   • Travel time: Around 4–5 minutes.
   • Cost: ¥130–¥160.
   • Pro tip: The express skips a few stops but reaches Shimokitazawa quickly.
3. From Tokyo Station:
   • Take the JR Chuo Line (Rapid) to Shinjuku.
   • Switch to the Odakyu Line heading towards Shimokitazawa.
   • Travel time: About 25–30 minutes in total.
   • Cost: ¥390–¥410.

By Taxi (Convenient but Expensive)

• From central Tokyo, a taxi ride to Shimokitazawa will take about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.
• Cost: Roughly ¥3,000–¥4,500, depending on your starting point.
