Leaving Peñíscola behind, we set off on a scenic drive north towards the Ebro Delta Natural Park, a vast wetland paradise in southern Catalonia. The journey began with wide open views and peaceful countryside roads leading us into the heart of the delta.
After exploring the park’s quiet marshes and shimmering rice fields, we backtracked slightly to cross the River Ebro at the charming village of Amposta. This small town is often overlooked, yet full of local character. Sitting gracefully on the banks of the Ebro, Amposta offers a glimpse of real Catalan life. The old stone bridge that spans the river is a local landmark, and the riverside promenade makes a perfect spot to stretch your legs and watch the slow-moving water drift by. There’s also a castle ruin and a handful of cafés where time seems to stand still — ideal for a coffee break before heading deeper into the delta.
Amposta and Riumar
From Amposta, we continued towards Riumar, a tiny seaside village tucked away at the mouth of the Ebro River. Riumar feels wonderfully remote — a place where the sea and the breeze dictate the rhythm of life. The wide, sandy beaches here are some of the quietest on the Catalan coast, stretching for miles. Perfect for peaceful walks. You can often spot flamingos and herons in the nearby lagoons. They add a splash of pink and white against the blue sky.
Riumar – Where the River Meets the Sea
Tucked away in the Ebro Delta, Riumar is one of Spain’s best-kept secrets. This little seaside village sits where the mighty River Ebro flows into the Mediterranean. After soaking up the tranquillity of Riumar and its coastal charm, we drove on to our next campsite in Cambrils, feeling refreshed and inspired by the serene beauty of the Ebro Delta and its hidden villages.
