Bakery on the Water

We visited Bakery on the Water at Bourton on the Water, which is in the Cotswolds recently. What a lovely little cafe/bakery. A small family-run artisan bakery located in the heart of the Cotswolds in Bourton-on-the-Water, by the River Windrush. I could see the baker’s ovens in the kitchen. That was the No 1 clue that they made their own bread.

The Cafe was half full on this Saturday afternoon, but it was well after lunch, about 1.30 pm. We chose a Ham and Cheese Sandwich served on freshly sliced wholemeal bread, baked in-house. It was a good portion and the salad that accompanied it was tasty with a nice dressing. The coffee was of excellent quality, an Americano with hot milk on the side. They source this from a local company in Cirencester. Rave Coffee, who roast their own coffee beans. You can buy some of this coffee to take away and brew at home.

At Bakery on the Water the cakes that they displayed in the window looked good, and all homemade. They had Lemon Drizzle cake, Frangipane Tart, Raspberry and Custard Turnovers, Cinnamon scrolls and Scones, to name but a few. Cream tea for 2 after our sandwich was a good choice, Scones Jam and clotted cream. On a nice day, you can choose to eat out in the Riverside Garden, or inside. We chose inside as it’s a little cold in February. The Staff seemed efficient and quickly cleaned down tables as well as swiftly serving customers. Bourton on the Water is certainly a tourist destination. A few hundred overseas visitors ambled around the shops and the riverside walk. I would imagine that on a nice day, the Cafe would be very busy, so go early.
