Getting Around from Noordwijkerhout by Public Transport
One of the biggest surprises during our stay in Noordwijkerhout was just how easy it was to explore without using the campervan. Although the village does not have its own railway station, it has an excellent bus network linking it with nearby towns and major transport hubs. From there, regular trains open up much of the Netherlands.
Qbuzz operates the local bus services, with frequent connections to Leiden, Sassenheim, Lisse, Noordwijk, Schiphol Airport and beyond. The nearby railway stations at Sassenheim, Hillegom and Leiden Centraal provide fast rail services across the country. Public transport has improved significantly in recent years, making Noordwijkerhout an ideal base for exploring South Holland.
Getting Around with Qbuzz
During our stay, we found Qbuzz to be an excellent way to explore the area. The buses are clean, comfortable and run regularly throughout the day. From Noordwijkerhout, you can easily reach nearby towns such as Leiden, Lisse, Noordwijk aan Zee, Sassenheim and even Schiphol Airport. It meant we could leave the campervan on the campsite and enjoy the day without worrying about traffic or parking.
Paying with OVpay
Using public transport couldn’t be much simpler. The Dutch OVpay system lets you travel by tapping your contactless bank card, credit card, smartphone or smartwatch when you board the bus. Simply tap the same card or device again when you get off, and your fare is worked out automatically. There’s no need to buy paper tickets or preload a travel card, making it ideal for visitors from the UK.
What Does It Cost?
OVpay doesn’t charge any extra fees. You simply pay the normal fare based on the distance you travel. Short journeys cost just a few euros, while longer trips naturally cost more. We found it to be excellent value, especially compared with the cost of fuel and parking. Just remember to tap on when you board and tap off when you leave; otherwise you could be charged more than your actual journey.
